Select which build of DrJava is right for you, and click on the appropriate button. We recommend using the most recent stable or beta releases since they support all of the Java 5 language extensions and Java 6 APIs, which make Java programming simpler. We also recommend that Windows users download the .exe file, that Mac OS X users use the osx.tar.gz version, and that other users download the .jar version. If you have problems with a beta release of DrJava, you can roll back to the most recent stable version. Experienced users may want to experiment with other versions of DrJava including the most recent Development Build jar instead. To do so, click on the "more download options" link.

Click on one of the Download buttons to go to the download server. Choose a site to download the file from, and then click on the corresponding icon in the "Download" column on the far right to start the download.

Freeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use).

This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.

This software is no longer available for the download. This could be due to the program being discontinued, having a security issue or for other reasons.

You will need the Java software development kit (JDK) from the Sun website. THIS MAY ALREADY BE ON YOUR COMPUTER. Don't attempt to download and install it unless you know you don't have it. If you have a Macintosh running Mac OS X, you almost certainly have it. If you have a PC, this site can check whether you have it:

See the Popular Downloads link on the right side of that page. Choose J2SE 5.0. Also, choose the J2SE JDK or SDK (not just the JRE and not the "bundles" that include other programming environments, such as netBeans). Warning: this is a big download!

If you want, open this web page (by clicking the link) in your browser and choose another version of DrJava to download. Get the latest version. Note that DrJava won't run unless you have a Java 2 v1.3 (or later) virtual machine already installed.

Warning: you may get a dialog saying something about a "JAR archive security check". If you do, just right-click on the DrJava download link and select "Save Link As" (or the equivalent in your browser).

Question: I downloaded Sun's J2SE SDK and DrJava. When it came to actually running DrJava, the following window kept popping up even though somehow DrJava still managed to run without me finding the file --what should I do?:

if you have followed the default options during the JDK download process. You can also use a desktop tool to search for this file on your computer. You simply need to set DrJava's Preferences to the correct path. To do so, follow these menu items: Edit - Preferences - Resource Locations - Tools.jar Location then type or browse to the correct location.

It may mean that your computer has two different systems on it and is an inconsistent state. If your computer has jre5.0, then it cannot use SDK 4.7. Uninstall SDK4.7 and download JDK 5.0 and use its tools.jar.

If it's not already installed on your system, you can download the JDK from Sun's Web site. You will need to have installed the JDK version 5 (note the distinction on the download pages between a Java Runtime Environment, which just contains the tools needed to run Java programs, and a Java Development Kit, which contains a compiler and other tools, in addition to the runtime application). You may also want to install JDK version 6. The DrJava sources depend on Java 5 (but not 6) language features and APIs. (Note: theoretically, any Java 5 compiler should be able to handle the DrJava sources. However, there are currently some dependencies on Sun's tools in the main DrJava code module, so you will need to have those tools available.)

Multiple Java Development Kit builds are available for download and installation. Oracle maintains the original, closed source Oracle JDK, but the company also helps develop the open source version of the environment called OpenJDK.

In order to compile Java programs on your own computer, you will need to install the Java Development Kit from Oracle's website.Scroll down to the section "Java Platform, Standard Edition" and click the download button under JDK.Then accept the license agreement and select the installer for your operating system.Don't forget to run the installer after you download it!If you run into trouble, the JDK Installation Guide has specific instructions for your operating system.

We will use DrJava as the primary development environment throughout the course.Windows and Mac users should download the Jar file instead of the outdated apps.There is no need to install the Jar file; simply double click it to run DrJava.Mac users may need to override security settings for the Jar file.Linux users may need to make the Jar file executable (i.e., chmod 755).

Go visit the Java2 home page (really, the page where you can download the Software Development Kit (SDK) 1.4). If you're downloading the Windows version, be sure to get the "windows offline installation", which includes all files needed and doesn't require an active internet connection to install. The distribution is big, roughly 36MB, so if you're connecting by slow modem, it's going to be a pain. DSL or Cable Modem users should have an easier time. You can always download it onto a UW lab machine with a CD burner and make a copy that you can carry home to install.

We strongly recommend you install the Java SDK in the the default directory suggested by the installer, which is C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03 for version 1.4.2_03. By doing that, you can keep your environment consistent with IPL machines and most students and TAs' environment. And you should be able to download the tools from us and run them directly without the need of modification. If you already installed Java SDK in another directory, we recommend you delete it - including the SDK, JRE, and Java Web Start - using the add/remove programs control panel, then run the installer and let it put the SDK in the default directory. (Do NOT just rename the original directory. It will NOT work). If you really want to use other directory names, you may have to make changes in other parts of the installation to match.

A sizeable part of the SDK distribution is source code. If disk space is limited on your machine, you don't need to install the source code, or the demos, but install everything else. (You'll eventually get the option of what you want to install when you run the j2sdk-XXX.exe installer program that you downloaded from Sun.) However, in past quarters, some students have had trouble getting Java to work if only part of it is installed, so it is best to install the entire package if you can.

An earlier version of Java, 1.3.1, comes pre-installed on OS X Jaguar. Java 1.4.1 was released in March 2003 for OS X 10.2.3 (Jaguar) and later versions. It is not available for OS X 10.1 and Mac OS 9 and earlier. To install Java 1.4.1, open the software update control panel, select check for updates, select Java 1.4.1 from the list of available updates, and click update. This is a large download, about 30MB, which is reasonable on a DSL or Cable modem line, but can be a pain if you have a slow dialup line. You can download the update from Apple onto a campus machine with a CD burner and make a copy on CD to carry home if you don't have a fast connection.

If you are working on Mac OS X 10.9.2 or newer, you may see a message about a software installer being damaged when you try to launch it. e.g. saying the software "is damaged and can't be opened. You should eject the disk image" or that the software "is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash." Newer Mac systems include a security setting that can block the installation of apps downloaded from places other than the Mac App Store.To install QIAGEN software, you need to allow apps downloaded from identified developers as well the Mac App Store.Do this by adjusting your security settings:
