The Story of Art is a classic in art history. It's still a great book to read, but it may not be as relevant as it was when it was written. Gombrich's approach to art criticism is useful for introductory courses. It is a good balance of theory and practice, which is why it has been widely adopted by art history and art educators. However, in the 21st century, this approach may not be as relevant. There are now more post-colonial and gender-based art histories and critics that are more focused on the audience and the public's needs.
One of the most important contributions that Gombrich makes in The Story of Art is to link the historical period to the art world. He makes it clear that artists create art for the public to share and enjoy. For example, in the fourth chapter, titled 'The Modern World,' Gombrich explains that artists adopted forms and styles from 19th-century art that were familiar to the public. In the fifth chapter, 'The Renaissance,' Gombrich describes the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci that brought a new Renaissance to art. He explains in the eighth chapter, 'From Fauvism to Cubism,' that the latter artists created a new style that seemed to rebel against the rules and expectations of the 19th-century. In the last chapter, 'Modern Art,' Gombrich explains that Picasso, Leonardo, and Kandinsky created an art that challenged the traditional modes of representation in Western art.
Gombrich is also self-deprecating. He admits that he is not an art historian and that he has no formal training in art history. Instead, he is an art scholar. He describes himself as a'man of the culture of the West' and 'a rara avis in the swamp of art and culture.'
MS. SCHULTZ: And this is the first edition in a new series of books entitled The Story of Art. I didn't know that. Well, I guess that's interesting. The Story of Art is one of the best art books I've read. It's huge, but it's also very easy to read. It's a great introduction to art and Gombrich's style is very accessible and it's a great read.
The only critical issue I had with The Story of Art was the title. It's a bit of a misnomer since it is a book on art rather than on history. However, it is a title many books have (see this article on The Story of Art ), and The Story of Art is not the only book on the subject. The Oxford History of Art is a more accurate title.
One criticism I have of Gombrich is that his approach to art history is too soft. He treats art as a product of human sensibility rather than of technology. He doesn't really distinguish between historical and artistic movements. When he writes about art, he writes like an art historian rather than a historian. For example, he writes about the Greeks like this:
