The journal covers a wide range of research topics in marine biochemistry with two main areas of emphasis: genomics and proteomics. Due to the increasing application of modern techniques in functional genomics and proteomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics are consistently becoming a key research areas in plant sciences. Presentation of plant genomes to study the functions of genomic information, and post-genomic studies such as expression of the genes in different parts of the plant and in response to different conditions will help in identification of the genes responsible for plant traits. Proteomics is one such important tool in molecular biology; it provides a comprehensive mapping of the proteins and protein-protein interactions of a cell or tissue at a particular point in time. This review addresses the subjects from the following perspectives: 1) Genomics of angiosperms, 2) Proteomics of angiosperms, 3) Biotechnology in angiosperms, 4) Plant biochemistry and biophysics, 5) Plant cell biology, 6) Plant development, 7) Plant disease and pest management, 8) Genomics and proteomics, 9) Environmental genomics and proteomics, 10) Plant chemistry and biochemistry, 11) Plant molecular genetics, 12) Plant structure and physiology, 13) Plant cell-cell and plant-microbe interactions, 14) Plant-organic and inorganic matter interactions, 15) Plant-insect interactions, 16) Plant-virus interactions, 17) Plant-herbivore and mammalian herbivore interactions, 18) Plant-pathogen interactions, 19) Plant-pollination interactions, 20) Plant-arthropod interactions, 21) Plant-fungus interactions, 22) Plant-botanical interactions, 23) Plant-phycology interactions, 24) Plant-microbe interactions, and 25) Plant-environment interactions. A special reference has been made on the proteome of the world’s most important crop, rice (Oryza sativa).
Due to the ‘green’ attributes of both lignocellulosic biomass and the ethanol produced from such biomass, there is a growing interest in the production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass [26]. Lignocellulosic biomass is composed of lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose and extractives. Lignin is a pervasive and abundant aromatic heteropolymer in the secondary cell walls of plant biomass, which is strongly bound to the polysaccharide matrix and cannot be separated effectively by conventional chemical approaches [7]. Lignin is a major recalcitrant substance in the agricultural industry and its removal can result in significant reductions of the cost of cellulose conversion to sugar as well as in the improvement of ethanol production [27].
