The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) is a 53-item self-report scale for the measurement of the severity of psychological symptoms within the last 7 days. The BSI consists of nine subscales: anxiety, depression, anger-hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism, sleep disturbance, and somatic complaints. The BSI is a short, well-validated instrument that has been broadly used in the field of mental health over the past 30 years.
Therefore, we developed an instrument, the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) [33], to detect and evaluate the severity of eating disorders. The Eating Disorder Examination is based on the well-established ICD-10 diagnostic criteria and therefore allows for an accurate diagnosis of eating disorders. The EDE provides a semi-structured interview and questionnaire that helps to assess and/or detect eating disorders by assessing and monitoring the severity of the following core symptoms of eating disorders: body mass index, eating attitudes, dietary restraint, shape and weight concerns, compensatory behavior, and nutritional and menstrual status. The EDE is a useful tool for the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of eating disorders. The EDE has been used in a wide range of samples including adult and adolescent populations, adults with eating disorders, and individuals at high risk for eating disorders. The interview and questionnaire can be administered via face-to-face interview or self-report.
