HIGHLIGHTSo MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 enables system growth by providing additional APPC/MVS support for application development. In addition, APPC/MVS enhancements simplify resource management by enabling the creation of logical unit (LU) 6.2 server programs that can manage resources on behalf of many clients.o Adds flexibility to systems configuration management through support of ESCON Multiple Image Facility, enabling PR/SM (TM) partitions to share ESCON channels with full HCD Dynamic Reconfiguration Management support.o Enhances systems management through the integration of HCD and ESCON Manager configuration definitions.o Provides enhanced systems management and user productivity with a new HCD graphical user interface feature for host configuration management, integrating HCD and ESCON Manager end user interfaces.o Improves systems management by allowing stand-alone dumps to DASD and by simplifying diagnosis in a sysplex.o Provides investment protection by allowing an installation's LU 6.2 client transaction programs to receive services from MVS server programs.o IBM intends to build POSIX support on MVS/ESA services on an MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 base. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.DESCRIPTIONGROWTH ENABLEMENTEnhancements in MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 allow installations togrow in areas of application programming support, and improvedAPPC/MVS application processing rates. Additional growth enablementenhancements extend the use of data-in-memory techniques, and mayreduce processor time in a demand paging environment. With the addition of APPC/MVS Server Facilities, MVSstrengthens its support for client/server programming. APPC/MVSServer Facilities provide installations with the high-level languagecallable services needed to write APPC/MVS servers (programs thatmanage multiple LU 6.2 inbound conversations from multiple clientsconcurrently.) Prior to this release, programs receiving multiple concurrentinbound conversations needed to use the APPC/MVS transactionscheduler interface. If a program does not need to have exclusiveuse of an LU, APPC/MVS servers may prove to be more attractive thantransaction schedulers, because servers are easier to code and neednot run authorized. Because the new callable services are available tounauthorized MVS application programs, APPC/MVS Server Facilitiesprovide a convenient method for unauthorized programs to establishcross-memory communications. A client/server application can use APPC/MVS Server Facilitiesto establish multiple, concurrent conversations between a client andits server. With this capability, the application could, forexample, dedicate one conversation in each direction (sending orreceiving). APPC/MVS Server Facilities help installations use MVSresources more efficiently. An installation can centralize, within asingle server address space, many of the requests for resources madeduring transaction processing. One server address space can be usedto serve many users concurrently, unlike the multiple initiatoraddress spaces commonly required to schedule transaction programs(standard and multitrans), which may consume more system resources. Other APPC/MVS changes include an enhancement to support LU6.2persistent verification receive, a security function. APPC/MVS application processing rates may improve in certainenvironments in conjunction with resource access control facility(RACF) Version 1 Release 9.2. These enhancements are also enabled onMVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 2.2. Along with DFSMS (TM)/MVS Version 1 Release 1, systemfunctionality may be improved by enhancements to checkpoint/restart,which will now function with dataspaces, VSAM Hiperspaces (TM), andVSAM LSR, thus extending data-in-memory benefits to additionalapplications that use checkpoint/restart. MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 supports the use of the LogicalString Assist function. Support for this function will be providedin the IBM Systems Application Architecture (R) (SAA (TM)) AD/Cycle(TM) C/370 compiler and may be of interest to developers of stringoperation intensive C applications. MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 support of the AsynchronousPageout Facility may reduce processor time associated with pagemovement to expanded storage in a demand paging environment. Foradditional details on Asynchronous Pageout Facility, Logical StringAssist support, see Product Announcement 192-146, datedJune 16, 1992. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.SYSTEMS MANAGEMENTThere are enhancements to systems management in configurationmanagement, connectivity on ESCON channels, dump processing andanalysis, system tuning and customization, storage management, security, and automatic job restart for a specific JES2 recoverysituation. HCD provides enhanced usability and enhanced reliability withthe new HCD graphical user interface feature and through integrationof HCD and ESCON Manager configuration definitions. The HCDgraphical user interface feature, together with ESCON ManagerVersion 1 Release 2 and ScreenView, a feature of MVS/ESA SPVersion 4, provides for MVS/ESA environments a single, integratedSystemView conforming graphical user interface on a programmableworkstation. With this support, the Host Configuration Statement ofDirection made in Programming Announcement 291-474, datedSeptember 11, 1991, will be fulfilled. Users can enter hostconfiguration definitions once, reducing user input time, andeliminating inconsistencies. The integration also extends the scopeof HCD input validation to the ESCON Director definitions andtherefore allows the validation of the total data path. Easynavigation between tasks simplifies host configuration planning andcan result in faster response to users' configuration changerequests. Cross operating system support is provided by extending thescope of HCDs to the VM/ESA (TM) environment. Users can define hardware configurations for one or more MVSand VM operating systems and channel subsystems from a single point.MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 support of both ESCON Multiple ImageFacility and Dynamic Reconfiguration Management allows non-disruptivechanges to input/output (I/O) configuration definitions on processorsimplementing ESCON channel sharing among PR/SM logical partitions. For more information on ESCON Multiple Image Facility, see ProductAnnouncement 192-146. MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 also now includes ESCONchannel-to-channel (CTC) basic mode support. Customer environmentsrequiring basic mode CTC support may now migrate to an ESCONenvironment from parallel connectivity with 3088 Multisystem ChannelCommunication Units. Migration of basic mode CTC applications toESCON CTC enables exploitation of ESCON Multiple Image Facility andall other ESCON connectivity advantages. Now, CTC connectivity forGRS (in a non-sysplex environment), JES3 global-local and BSC NJE inJES2 and JES3 can be implemented with ESCON CTC. Additional systems management enhancements are provided in theareas of dump processing and analysis and system tuning. A user maynow take a stand-alone dump to a direct access storage device (DASD).A stand-alone dump taken to DASD reduces operator intervention duringdump processing. In addition, enhancements to multi-system dumpanalysis and elimination (DAE) allow sysplex-wide suppression ofsupervisor call instruction (SVC) dumps and SYSMDUMP dumps. Reducingthe number of dumps taken in the sysplex may enhance systemavailability. Installations can now track the use of system queue area (SQA)and common service area (CSA) storage, so that a monitor program, such as RMF, or dumps can report detailed information about commonstorage usage, identifying jobs or subsystems that are usingexcessive amounts. With such information, an operator may choose tocancel one or more programs to avoid a re-IPL of the system. SeeProgramming Announcement 292-311, dated June 16, 1992. for moreinformation. The authorized program facility (APF) table now can bedynamically updated, either on an individual entry basis or byplacing the information into a parmlib member, without having tore-IPL the system. Along with DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 1, MVS/ESA SP Version 4Release 3 supports the IBM 3495 Tape Library Dataserver, providingautomation and management of retrieving, mounting, demounting andstoring tape cartridges. Additional MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 support withDFSMS/MVS allows users to store and load executable code in apartitioned dataset extended (PDSE). For more information, seeProgramming Announcement 292-260, dated May 19, 1992. APPC/MVS provides a method for changing the user's MVSpassword via an LU 6.2 session. The installation can tailor the userinterface of this function to meet the needs of the end users. MVS/ESA SP-JES2 has been enhanced to provide automatic restartof jobs for a failed MAS member and automatic reset of the JES2software lock, reducing operator intervention. System availabilitymay be improved as installations may be able to reduce the time whenbatch job processing is unavailable. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.USER PRODUCTIVITYThe HCD graphical user interface feature provides a SystemViewconforming graphical user interface on a programmable workstation.Users will be able to enter, display, tailor (filter), change, andprint configuration views. The integration of host configuration(HCD and ESCON Manager) allows the user easy navigation betweenvarious configuration tasks. The scope of HCD input validation is extended to include theESCON Director definitions and therefore allows the validation of thetotal data path. Users can enter host configuration definitionsonce, eliminating inconsistencies, and enhancing reliability ofoperation and service. Users can get an overview about past or planned configurationchanges with the ability to compare host configuration definitiondatasets. Another enhancement is the GRS latch manager, a serializationservice that authorized programs can use to serialize resourceswithin the same MVS image. The latch manager supports task mode, SRBmode, and cross memory mode environments, and allows resources to beefficiently serialized for shared or exclusive access. Other optionsand features offer authorized applications a flexible alternative forsolving specific serialization needs.INVESTMENT PROTECTIONThe APPC/MVS Server Facilities allow an installation to implementservers without having to modify the code of its client transactionprograms written for previous releases of APPC/MVS. APPC/MVS ServerFacilities represents IBM's continuing commitment to APPC anddistributed processing.PRODUCT POSITIONINGMVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 continues the evolution of MVS/ESA SPVersion 4 with enhancements to functions introduced in the previousreleases, as well as the introduction of new function. Two areaswhere this evolution is of special note are APPC/MVS and HCD.APPC/MVS: Introduced in MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 2, APPC/MVSenhanced the inter-operability between MVS application programs andsystems or programs that communicate using SNA LU 6.2 formats andprotocols. With APPC/MVS, it is easier to develop cooperative, distributed MVS applications that allow remote programs to access MVSdata and services. APPC/MVS also supports SAA Common ProgrammingInterface for Communications (CPI-C). This interface improves theportability of MVS applications across other SAA platforms. MVS/ESA SP 4.3 continues the commitment to APPC/MVS and theclient/server processing paradigm with APPC/MVS Server Facilities.APPC/MVS Server Facilities address customer and software vendorrequirements for enabling development of servers using APPC/MVS.These server facilities enable the client/server processing model onMVS by providing the capability to write MVS resident servers usingcallable services available to unauthorized MVS application programs.Server facilities allow MVS resident servers, on behalf of theirclients, to manage MVS resources, data, and services moreefficiently. APPC/MVS continues to be the conversational communicationmodel for MVS. Independent software vendor applications using APPC/MVS ServerFacilities are currently under development. The HCD graphical user interface feature andESCON Manager, using the services of ScreenView, provide the initialtasks of a host configuration work area. ScreenView handles thesharing of task information for the configuration applications, presenting the user with a logical view of tasks on a programmableworkstation. It provides the graphical, text, and command servicesfor presentation and navigation. The user sees an easy-to-use objectinterface that is consistent across all applications usingScreenView. See Programming Announcement 291-534, datedSeptember 11, 1991, for more information about ScreenView.STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTIONSTATEMENT OF DIRECTION ON POSIX SUPPORT ON MVS/ESAIBM intends to significantly expand MVS/ESA's role in an open-systemsenvironment by providing interfaces to enable interoperability ofapplications within a heterogeneous network, and increase portabilityof applications, data, and skills with other environments conformingto the same open systems standards. Refer to Programming Announcement P81-174, datedOctober 21, 1981. This control program is intended to runauthorized.SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL Data security and auditability in the MVS/ESA SP Version 4Release 3 environment are enhanced by the functions available in RACFlicensed program (5740-XXH.)SECURITY APARSIBM will continue to accept Security APARs for MVS/ESA SP Version 4Release 3. Security APARs are for reporting problems in existingsecurity mechanisms where the problem descriptions do not meet theprecise definition of system integrity, but do constitute an exposureto the security of the system as a whole or to an IBM product whichruns on the system. Originally announced in Programming Announcement289-581, dated October, 1989, this commitment is being enhanced, asfollows, to accept Security APARs when the installation or use ofthis MVS program violates B1 criteria.MVS B1 SUPPORTSelected MVS/ESA programs, collectively called a trusted computingbase (TCB), were evaluated by the United States Department ofDefense's National Computer Security Center (NCSC), found to meet thecriteria for a B1 level of trusted system, and posted on theEvaluated Product List in September, 1990. The following programs, along with specific service, were evaluated in 1990:o MVS/SP-JES2 Version 3 Release 1.3o MVS/SP-JES3 Version 3 Release 1.3o MVS/DFP Version 3 Release 1.1o ACF/VTAM Version 3 Release 3o TSO/E Version 2 Release 1.1o RACF Version 1 Release 9o PSF/MVS Version 1 Release 3. For more information on the IBM MVS/ESA JES2 and JES3 SecuritySystem Packages, refer to Programming Announcement 290-497, datedSeptember 5, 1990, or MVS/ESA Planning: B1 Security for MVS/SPVersion 3 (GC28-1800) or contact your IBM marketing representative. Today, IBM is announcing that MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3when running on ES/9000 systems with appropriate levels of the otherTCB programs, is designed to meet the B1 criteria as it was appliedto the MVS/ESA TCB during the 1990 evaluation. The criteria appliedwas based on the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria (DOD5200.28-STD) and included interpretations made by the NCSC and theevaluation team. The claim being made today is based solely onsecurity analysis and testing performed by IBM. The updated TCB hasnot been evaluated by the NCSC. IBM will accept a Security APAR whenthe installation or use of MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 violatesthe B1 criteria. Analysis and testing has been performed by IBM on the supportadded to MVS/ESA SP Version 4 Release 3 since MVS/ESA Version 3Release 1.3 including Dynamic Reconfiguration Management and manyother features. In addition, IBM hardware that has become availablesince the TCB evaluation (for example, ES/9000 processors and 3900printers) was included in the analysis and testing. For moreinformation on the appropriate program levels, supported features, and on limitations, refer to MVS/ESA Planning: B1 Security forMVS/ESA Version 4 (GC28-1171), which will become available at MVS/ESASP Version 4 Release 3 general availability.
