Directed by John Hughes and released in 1990, Home Alone, is a coming of age comedy/drama about a single thirteen-year-old boy named Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) who gets left behind on Christmas while his family is visiting his grandmother in Chicago.

Kevin's parents, portrayed by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, are out of town and upon arriving at the airport they separate. Kevin's mother is left to board the plane, while his father is dropped off at the baggage claim area, believing he is already at the airport. In reality, Kevin's father, rather than at the baggage claim area, went to a hotel, leaving the boy with a sitter.

The next morning, Kevin, being the only child at home, is the only one who knows where the family members are. While playing in his room, Kevin sets off a fire alarm and is eventually found by his mother, who decides to adopt him and bring him along.

Three days later, the family returns home from their vacation, but Kevin remains in Chicago with the sitter. During their visit, Kevin witnesses an attempt by his parents to reconcile their relationship and in a moment of anger Kevin breaks his parents' newly-wedding picture, causing his mother to slap him.

Eventually the family decides to spend Christmas in Chicago, but Kevin does not return home until after the holiday. His father leaves for work that day and soon Kevin is left alone once more, to his dismay. But on Christmas Eve Kevin learns that his parents were in a car accident. Kevin's mother is killed, but his father is alive, which the family sees as a miracle. The father tells Kevin his mother was his first true love and tells him that while they had been estranged for the past few years, they were still deeply in love. His parents reconcile and soon both Kevin and his father have a new mother and father.

Two years later, Kevin's parents are sending him to New York to live with his father's parents, who are elderly and in declining health. Kevin's father knows that his mother had just died, but wishes to avoid telling Kevin, until the last possible moment.

Meanwhile, Kevin has adopted the personality of a New York City native. In an attempt to keep Kevin from finding out the truth, his father arranges for him to be taken to the airport, where he will board his flight to New York. Kevin is met by a man (Samuel L. Jackson) who pretends to be his friend, takes him to his home, and teaches him the art of crime. Kevin befriends a nearby drug dealer, Alf, who is killed by Kevin's gang of thieves.
