The movie is set in the year 1906. The story begins with a Brahmin family in ancient India that is being attacked by the British Army because they have refused to pay taxes. The family takes shelter in a village where the girls of the family work as dancers and the boys are farmers. They are eventually discovered by the British Army and are sent off to a detention camp. Shiva is an 18-year-old farmer's son who is forced to work as a coachman for the British Army. Shiva is a very nice boy who likes to help the villagers in anyway he can.

He is then taken back to the brothel and sexually abused by Fereton and one of the younger women. Sheringham is then taken back to his hotel room where he is sodomized, forced to drink, and drugged. A woman from the brothel sneaks into Sheringham's room and attempts to rape him. He notices the door is unlocked, and enters Sheringham's room to find his clothes have been torn off.
The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff, Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Kunal Khemu, Gulshan Grover and Deepak Dobriyal. It was a blockbuster at box office, grossing US$1,485,000 in its first week. The film was released with a limited release in the United States on 23 September 2008.
The movie was dubbed in Tamil as Udhayam 2006 and in Telugu as Udhayam. The rights are owned by Viacom 18 films. Viacom 18 has also acquired the Hindi and Telugu version rights of the movie. The movie will be released in 2012. The original film starred Salman Khan as Shiva, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Helen, and Rohini Hattangadi.
