Solaris File Temporarily Unavailable On The Server Retrying

Hard-mounted remote file systems cause programs to hang until the server responds because the client retries the mount request until it succeeds. You should use the -bg flag with the mount command when performing a hard mount so that if the server does not respond, the client will retry the mount in the background.
When an application program writes data to a file in an NFS-mounted file system, the write operation is scheduled for asynchronous processing by the biod daemon. If an error occurs at the NFS server at the same time that the data is actually written to disk, the error is returned to the NFS client and the biod daemon saves the error internally in NFS data structures. The stored error is subsequently returned to the application program the next time it calls either the fsync or close functions. As a consequence of such errors, the application is not notified of the write error until the program closes the file. A typical example of this event is when a file system on the server is full, causing writes attempted by a client to fail.
If the file system you want is not in the list, or your machine name or netgroup name is not in the user list for the file system, log in to the server and check the /etc/exports file for the correct file system entry. A file system name that appears in the /etc/exports file, but not in the output from the showmount command, indicates a failure in the mountd daemon. Either the daemon could not parse that line in the file, it could not find the directory, or the directory name was not a locally mounted directory. If the /etc/exports file looks correct and your network runs NIS, check the server's ypbind daemon. It may be stopped or hung.
Check the server's /etc/exports file, and, if applicable, the ypbind daemon. In this case you can just change your host name with the hostname command and retry the mount command.
Check the servers from which you have mounted file systems if your machine hangs completely. If one or more of them is down, do not be concerned. When the server comes back up, your programs continue automatically. No files are destroyed.
If a soft-mounted server dies, other work is not affected. Programs that time out trying to access soft-mounted remote files fail with the errno message, but you will still be able to access your other file systems.
The simplest case occurs when nonsecure mounts are specified and NIS is not used. In this case, user IDs (UIDs) and group IDs (GIDs) are mapped solely through the server and clients /etc/passwd and /etc/group files, respectively. In this scheme, for a user named john to be identified both on the client and on the server as john, the user john in the /etc/passwd file must have the same UID number. The following is an example of how this might cause problems:
The server bar thinks the files belong to user jane, because jane is UID 200 on bar. If john logs on directly to bar by using the rlogin command, he may not be able to access the files he just created while working on the remotely mounted file system. jane, however, is able to do so because the machines arbitrate permissions by UID, not by name.
The only permanent solution to this is to reassign consistent UIDs on the two machines. For example, give john UID 200 on server bar or 250 on client foo. The files owned by john would then need to have the chown command run against them to make them match the new ID on the appropriate machine.
When mounting a file system from a pre-Version 3 NFS server onto a Version 3 NFS client, a problem occurs when the user on the client executing the mount is a member of more than eight groups. Some servers are not able to deal correctly with this situation and deny the request for the mount. The solution is to change the user's group membership to a number less than eight and then retry the mount. The following error message is characteristic of this group problem:

If your resolv.conf file contains valid DNS servers, but the error persists, it may be due to misconfigured file permissions. Change ownership of the file to the root user with the following command:
In other words, NFS servers can choose how to behave if a file isrenamed; it's perfectly valid for any NFS server to return a Stale fileerror when that happens. We surmised that even though the results weredifferent, the problem was likely related to the same issue. Wesuspected some cache validation issue because running ls in thedirectory would "clear" the error. Now that we had a reproducible testcase, we asked the experts: the Linux NFS maintainers.
In a nutshell, NFS v4 introduced server delegations as a way to speed up file access. A server candelegate read or write access to a client so that the client doesn'thave to keep asking the server whether that file has changed by anotherclient. In simpler terms, a write delegation is akin to someone lendingyou a notebook and saying, "Go ahead and write in here, and I'll take itback when I'm ready." Instead of having to ask to borrow the notebookevery time you want to write a new paragraph, you have free rein untilthe owner reclaims the notebook. In NFS terms, this reclamation processis called a delegation recall.
Indeed, a bug in the NFS delegation recall might explain the Stale filehandle problem. Remember that in the earlier experiment, Alice hadan open file to test1.txt when it was replaced by test2.txt later.It's possible that the server failed to recall the delegation ontest1.txt, resulting in an incorrect state. To check whether this wasan issue, we turned to tcpdump to capture NFS traffic and usedWireshark to visualize it.
In this diagram, we can see in step 1 Alice opens test1.txt and getsback an NFS file handle along with a stateid of 0x3000. When Bobattempts to rename the file, the NFS server tells to Bob to retry viathe NFS4ERR_DELAY message while it recalls the delegation from Alicevia the CB_RECALL message (step 3). Alice then returns her delegationvia DELEGRETURN (step 4), and then Bob attempts to send anotherRENAME message (step 5). The RENAME completes in both cases, butAlice continues to read using the same file handle.
The main difference happens at the bottom at step 6. Notice in NFS v4.0(the stale file case), Alice attempts to reuse the same stateid. InNFS v4.1 (working case), Alice performs an additional LOOKUP andOPEN, which causes the server to return a different stateid. In v4.0,these extra messages are never sent. This explains why Alice continuesto see stale content because she uses the old file handle.

Status code 503, "service unavailable", is a server-side error. It usually means the server is temporarily unavailable. It's not ready to handle the request, and won't be able to process it. If a server is down for maintenance or overloaded, it will often return with a 503 response.
