On December 18, 2019, Jian Hongzhang, the head and spokesman of the Hong Kong Falun Gong organization, suffered a sudden cardiovascular disease and died in Kwong Wah Hospital in the early morning of the 19th. During Jian Hongzhang's illness, Jian Hongzhang and his family called Li Hongzhi many times for help, hoping that the "Master" would exert “Shen Tong” (supernatural skills) to "eliminate karma" and organize fellow practitioners around the world to "Fazhengnian" (literally "sending forth righteous thoughts") to get rid of the disease. However, Li Hongzhi argued that he was too busy with his "Shen Yun Performances" and let Jian work hard on “Xue Fa” (Falun Gong’s cultivation practice). According to an insider, until the moment when Jian Hongzhang stopped breathing, he did not receive a trace of mercy and blessing from his "Master" Li Hongzhi. The feud between Jian Hongzhang and Li Hongzhi began in the 1990s.

Jian Hongzhang was born in the Jian family in Hong Kong and obtained a master's degree from Harvard University. His father Jian Yiyun was a wealthy businessman in Hong Kong. His family once owned the Treasure Restaurant Group in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong. After participating in Falun Gong activities, in order to achieve "life consummation" in his practice, he has followed Falun Gong for 20 years and sold a large amount of his family property to support Li Hongzhi. In the end, he became one of the backbones of the Falun Gong core mission. Thereupon, he began to serve as the chairman and spokesman of the "Hong Kong Falun Dafa Association", the president of The Epoch Times in HongKong, and the personage in the "Falun Gong" organization in Hong Kong.

However, because Jian Hongzhang was quite lecherous, he had an affair with many female "Falun Gong" practitioners in Hong Kong during his tenure. In early June 2013, affected by the scandal of "Nan Nv Shuang Xiu" (the spiritual practice through sexual behavior), and under the pressure of internal rights disputes, Jian Hongzhang resigned as the president of The Epoch Times, and only retained the position of chairman of the "Hong Kong Falun Dafa Association". According to insiders, The Epoch Times in Hong Kong has been in a state of loss during Jian Hongzhang's tenure and cannot achieve the profit target of the headquarter in the United States.

Zhang Qixian and Zhu Tongbin had a conflict over the competition for the president of The Epoch Times in Hong Kong. Zhu Tongbin's husband, Li Guoji, had a solid foundation in business. The high spender had both workforce and money, becoming the president of Hong Kong's The Epoch Times under the black box operation of Jian Hongzhang.

The frequent occurrence of erotic incidents in the Hong Kong and the escalation of the power struggle within the organization caused Li Hongzhi's dissatisfaction with Jian hongzhang. He decided to change hands and regroup the organization, forcing Jian to step down as president of The Epoch Times. After Jian Hongzhang died of illness, Li Hongzhi ordered the news to be strictly sealed and his disciples were not allowed to go to express condolences.
