The film is based on Michael's memoir, and as you might guess, some of the Tuohys' generous treatment of the boy isn't true. The story lines are not always happy. But it's a story about two boys coming to terms with their pasts, and about a boy learning to fit in with a new family. The movie is about learning and change. It's a film about a boy who learns to value himself and his family, and about a family who learns to value a boy who is different from them.
The movie makes a strong point about the evil of fear. Early in the movie, Eli is shown fighting in a children's game to stay alive, and the movie suggests that the small children are the innocents in the war to rid the world of evil and darkness. In the end, Eli is forced to make a choice: kill a young girl he loves, or allow her to be killed by a monster. This is a really hard and emotionally difficult choice for him to make. But it's more than that: the viewer is meant to recognize that an adult would be forced to make a similar choice in a similar circumstance.
For me, the questions that emerged as I watched The Book of Eli were, what is the movie saying about the importance of fear, the goodness of violence, and the morality of taking shortcuts?
The movie is an epic, to be sure; it's long and sweeping, with a good soundtrack that's pleasant to listen to while you're on a plane. The visuals are clear and colorful, and there's a lot of sun and sand. The story is presented in what feels like a very cinematic way - the characters are vivid, and it's easy to see what they might be feeling and thinking about. It's a handsome movie with an interesting plot and an exciting set piece, and the performances are good. I didn't find it dull.
In the case of The Book of Eli, the studio and the filmmakers do a lot to make it look like the kind of movie a lot of people will get excited to see. What's less clear is how many people will come out of the theater feeling a bit more hopeful about the world.
